Joulutortut ovat yleensä voitaikinasta valmistettuja leivonnaisia, jotka on perinteisesti muotoiltu tähdeksi ja täytetty luumuhillolla. Torttujen päälle voi sirotella jouluisen vaikutelman luomiseksi tomusokeria. Vaihtoehtoisesti tortuista voi tehdä muun kuin tähden muotoisia ja täytteenä voi käyttää esimerkiksi omenahilloa
Das Weihnachtsgebäck, oder auch Weihnachtstörtchen genannt wird im allegmeinen aus Blätterteil gefertigt, in dem man quadtratische Stuecke an den Ecken einschneidet und zu einem Stern formt. Danach fuellt man es mit Pflaumenmus.
Nach dem Backen verziehrt man die Törtchen mit Zucker.
Man kann als Alternative aber auch Apfel- oder Aprikosenmarmelade verwenden, auch Erdbeerkonfiture eignet sich.

Lucia wird am 13. Dezember gefeiert.
Das Fest kam urspruenglich von Schweden nach Finnland.
Das Fest, bei dem ein weissgekleidetes Mädchen eine Kerzenkrone trägt, ist nur deshalb mit Weihnachten verknuepft, weil der Gedenktag der heiligen Lucia in die Weihnachtszeit fällt.
Die Wahl der Lucia und die Prozession sind aber auch in vielen finnischen Städten mittlerweile Tradition.
Die urspruengliche Lucia war eine sizilianische Jungfrau, die sich weigerte, den von ihrem Vater als kuenftigen Gatten ausgewählten Mann zu heiraten.
Lucia starb den Märtyrertod.
In Helsinki findet zu Ehren der Lucia eine schön anzusehende Prozession statt, bei der Lucia eine Kerzenkrone trägt und von ihrem Hof umgeben ist.
Das weisse Gewand symbolisiert die Reinheit,
die Flammen der Kerzen den Scheiterhaufen.

Tiernapojat - Die Sternensinger gehören in Finnland auch zum Weihnachtsfest. Hier ziehen sie bereits im Dezember durch die Lande oder haben Vorstellungen in öffentlichen Gebäuden oder auf Weihnachtsmärkten.

Tiernapojats - Three Kings
Tiernapojat - Three kings, also known as tähtipojat ("Star Boys"), here in Pohjolankatu at Käpylä, Helsinki, have been around a long time ? for centuries. Students in old Oulu, a town in Northwestern Finland, who were in need of some extra cash,put together a Christmas pageant with singing, costumes and dialogue that has its roots in the Medieval mystery play.
This little show was then taken "on the road", from house to house, and after the performance, donations were solicited in the form of a few coins.
The story was of the maggi visiting King Herod and Baby Jesus, told with boyish vim and vigor. (It becomes quickly evident that tiernapojat is a distant echo of the Spanish Posada and Reyes Magos.)
An interesting detail ? typical of these folkloric sagas ? is the insertion of a local personage to bring home a point. In this story it is the Russian T?ar Alexander, Grand Duke of Finland, who is described here as a sort of a redeemer who "took away slavery, he did away with tyrants, /He converteth, toppleth the lands of the foe. /Thus, rejoice, all our land, /Because ye have escaped your troubles." It is not clear to me whether he is compared to Jesus or Herod, or even Caesar Augustus, but the analogy is obvious.
The story line is in old Oulu-dialect that adds its own bourgeois drama to the play. The music is repetitive, all in one key, and has a haunting simplicity and a quasi-oriental quality that seem most fitting. Multi-meters are present in some of the songs, apparently to allow for the folklore-type, free-flowing text. The singing manner to this day is somewhat operatic, yet strictly amateurish. (The step-wise motion in most melodies makes them easy for untrained voices.) The play is never to be "polished" ? part of the charm is its road show quality. Consequently, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to perform this pageant.
